Rating: 4/5 stars.

This isn’t so much a review rather than me stating how intensely depressing this book was. It was so despairing and dreadful. Yet intensely thought-provoking, all the same.

I’d like to make a point about this book which opens up the possibility that Orwell’s vision wasn’t quite as dark and depressing as people think!

The book doesn’t end with the protagonist loving Big Brother, not really. It ends with an essay explaining Newspeak, written in the past tense in standard english. What function does this serve? I think it suggests that Big Brother’s reign of terror did end after all!

    • I actually hadn’t even considered that paradigm. I do remember the ending being terribly depressing (at least for me) in that I felt like all hope for humanity and anyone trying to revolt against Big Brother had been decimated… but I will take another look at it, thank you for pointing that out!
