Rating: 4/5 stars.
To be fair, I had high expectations before beginning this book. Its predecessor, If I Stay, portrayed Mia’s impossible decision between letting go and staying alive. With Where She Went, readers finally get the chance to see Adam’s perspective of the events that perforated his and Mia’s lives forever.
Gayle Forman writes beautifully – her prose is simple and direct but conveys meaning through her word choice and diction. There were a few of brilliant moments that enraptured me and had me holding my breath in suspense.
Still, this book lacked that extra something to earn it five stars. I couldn’t connect entirely with the story, despite how I loved the characters and their personalities. It felt a bit contained – the tension thickened as the novel progressed, but by the end I was left a little disappointed that it didn’t have an absolute breakout moment.
Where She Went is a satisfying sequel to If I Stay. It is a poignant story of grief, acceptance, and rekindled romance.
