About Me

08-22-19_104355

Welcome! “The Quiet Voice” serves as a space for me, Thomas, to share vulnerable thoughts on mental health, society, and life at large. I emphasize vulnerability because we live in a world that shames people for their mental health issues and personal challenges, when we should instead encourage a culture of help-seeking and empathy. If we practice compassion towards others and ourselves, we can work as a collective to overcome our hardships and seek healing. As a gay Asian American man, I find it even more important to discuss my life and my hardships with honesty, because queer individuals and people of color often experience even more stigma for mental health conditions. As essayist Leslie Jamison writes, “suffering is interesting but so is getting better.” Thus, this blog aims to address both the roots of suffering as well as the steps we can take to get better.

Idealism aside, a little bit about me: I graduated with degrees in Psychology and English in 2017, and I am now a graduate student in Psychology living in the D.C. Metro area. I started this blog almost a decade ago in high school as a way to share my thoughts about family and life, and now, it serves both as a keeper of my past and as a platform for my present. A few things I love: quality time spent with friends, dismantling patriarchal gender roles, upbeat and empowering pop music (e.g., BlackPink, Twice), books, and fanboying my favorite writers (e.g., Caroline Knapp, Hanya Yanagihara, Audre Lorde, to name a few).

Through my writing, I seek truths – truths about society, truths about my life, and how these truths intersect. I want my writing to inspire us to question society’s conventions. I want my writing to make you feel less alone. May this blog serve as a space for healing, growth, and working toward creating a better world, one step at a time.

YO THOMAS!!!! nice blog!!!!! love the falling snow and the very accurate description of ur self!!!

  2. Thomas

Thank you Sabrine, you’re too kind (:

  3. ApparentPyromaniac

“fairly” friendly? HA!! You’re probably the nicest person I know……(Well, okay Jolie could give you a run for your money but still). And the snow is awesome! I love how if I scroll down I have to wait for it to start falling again! (<– suprisingly not sarcasm)

  4. lightningflash2

I feel like you’ve changed the background, because everyone’s talking about falling snow but I don’t see it T_T
and I feel like a stalker for just randomly reading your blog. Okay, skimming. And seeing that their mostly book reviews. Haha okay bye

  5. Thomas

Ha ha yes, I was forced to remove the falling snow as it had a temporal availability period. ): But at least this new layout has books!

Don’t worry, I appreciate the views (: Yep, I double post a lot of my reviews on Goodreads… I probably should mention that somewhere.

  6. You are utterly too adorable. And a boy who reads – spectacular. You remind me of a my favorite students (I’m a tutor and admissions consultant). I’m going to friend you on Goodreads now.

  7. Thomas

Aw, thank you for your comment and kindness! I admit there isn’t exactly a myriad of males at my school who enjoy reading, but I’m glad at least one of your students does. I’ve already accepted (:

  8. Hey Thomas, I was updating some reviews on Goodreads.comand saw the link to your site. GOOD stuff man, I like the open design. Clean and neat.

  9. Thomas

I’m honored that you read my reviews on Goodreads. (: Thank you for the compliment and comment!

  10. cool blogs, your view on things in the world is amazing, and i dont mean this in a bad way but….. I’m suprised your a guy, sorry that came out wrong, not many guys I know would even hold a book in there hand much less read one.
sorry for the ramblin on….. I just wanted to comment on how cool your blog is 🙂

    • Thomas

Thanks for the comment Alyssa! Don’t worry about being surprised, I’ve gotten that before, it’s the internet after all. Loving books is something we have in common. 🙂

  11. Sameena

You have the best blog ever! I would like to know a little more about why Enrique hasn’t aged!

  12. Wow, um, not to sound awkward, but judging from that, you sound like me haha (excpet i’m definitely not a guy)
glad to see someone else likes to read! 🙂 and actually doesn’t like rap. which is rare. very rare… yep, I’m articulate…

  13. Everybody’s talking about how surprising it is that you’re a guy and you happen to like reading.. a lot – so I thought I might as well join in. 😛
I rarely meet a guy, especially at our age range who’s bookish, and seeing one now is a momentous sight, I may say.
I’m not an avid fan of pop, my genre’s more geared towards rock. So it goes to show I worship rock bands. I do share your sentiments towards rap. It never really captured my interest – same as R&B. I think the bling-blings are overrated. 😀
Although I would have to say Eminem’s an exception. Well, he’s hot. He has got to be an exception. 😀

  14. shayla

dude, just wanted to say, you’re awesome. And you have really good taste in books. i like blog. and uh yeah.

  15. Love your blog bro ! Nice to meet some inspirational teens.

  16. …..dude..after so many days(19 years actually)…..i found u….guy havin same weight of mind as mine…..its cool to meet u 🙂

  17. woooot!! pop music for the win! and how old are you?

  18. Howard

I happened to drop by this blog and I have to say, I’m impressed! I can see why you noted that you are ‘odd’, but I admire how comfortable and open you are with your views. I have mad respect for that. It’s almost impossible to believe you’re just a high school student.

    • Thank you! One reason I love blogging is that it gives me the opportunity to express who I am online, as I don’t get that chance often in real life. Mainly because, like you said, I’m a high school student, and my views don’t exactly mesh with my peers’.

Once again thanks for dropping by. (:

      • I agree with Howard’s comment! And I agree with what you said..blogging definitely gives one an opportunity to express oneself. Especially teens! I just graduated high school in june, but I kinda wish I had taken it up earlier, maybe when I was 15/16. But it’s all about being true to yourself and expressing yourself. That’s why I took it up! And none of my friends even know I have this thing, and I’d like to keep it that way, and it’s not the fact that I feel like I’d be judged or anything, it’s just the fact that it feels nice knowing that you really don’t know who’s even reading your blog, and they don’t KNOW you(sounds kinda creepy :P), so it’s all raw. It’s only been a month, and at first I didn’t think that very many people would be reading it..and I went into it thinking I’d just keep it kinda like a journal about daily events..but then I realized I had so much more to say about so much stuff!

      • Howard

I also agree, having an anonymous public blog and a blog that your peers know about makes how you approach the blog extremely different. Maybe having both kinds of blogs gives the most freedom. Thomas, I’m just curious – is there a reason why you don’t like rap that much?

        • Liz Dallton

id like to know too.. is it just personal taste or what? i dont really care… i personally dont like most country

          • Ah, sorry Howard for not responding to your comment! To both of you (Howard and Liz) the reason I don’t particularly enjoy rap is that I find that most of it is filled with offensive words and ideas – things that I don’t appreciate very much. Some of it is personal taste as there is rap music out there that contains meaningful lyrics and powerful concepts, but for the most part I avoid it anyway.

  19. Hey there! You sound cool, I mean I have not met a boy who loves to read.Not.Ever.And I doubt whether I ever will.I’m friending you on Goodreads if you don’t mind,I’d regret not doing that someday:P
Have a great day and good luck doing whatever it’s that you’re doing!

    • Hi! I’m happy to be your first guy friend who reads then. (: I’ve accepted your friend request on Goodreads and look forward to discussing books with you and what not. Thanks for dropping by!

  20. Thanks for the add!I’m looking foward for discussing whaterver there is to discuss too 😛

  21. Hi Thomas, loving your blog its very inviting and warm, I also love books its good to connect with people with the same interests. Also commend you for your drive especially at your young age 🙂

  22. I am presenting you with the Versatile Blogger Award. You can check it out at http://wp.me/p1gpNV-dg

  23. Wait public Ivy, those exist… Wow okay, proves to you how well-versed I am with college things. LET ME GUESS, THE ONE IN VIRGINIA? AM I RIGHT?Aww, you as a lawyer, how cute. >< JK, YOU WOULD MAKE A KICK-ASS LAWYER, THOMAS. I'M NOT SURE HOW YOUR PUBLIC SPEAKING SKILLS ARE BUT IF IT'S ANYTHING LIKE YOUR WRITING, THEN YOU WILL BE THE MOST SOUGHT AFTER LAWYER IN THE COUNTRY. -thumbs up-

      • Thanks Erika and Devina!

Erika, there are eight public Ivies – two of them are in Virginia, so, I suppose you’re half right. As for my public speaking skills… I don’t think they’re that bad, but they’re definitely not that great – I want to work on them so I’m considering joining the debate club at my school if it’s not too late. Anyway, once again thanks for the compliment. 😀

  24. Mariam.J

Nice blog, man! I am in many ways like you described yourself: ”My ideal life would be to run away to a cave or some other cozy place and read novel after novel nonstop.” That’s how I want to live (only for a while, of course!). Anyway, keep up the good job, I really like your book reviews!

    • I suppose reading books constantly without pause would get dull after awhile… who am I kidding, I would love to do that. (; Thank you for your kind words and for stopping by!

  25. ohmygoodness

Hi just found your blog somehow and really like it! I’m thinking about joining goodreads and if i do I’ll friend you on it haha!

Thanks for the link to Story of an Hour it was creepily good. I know you said you’re not a short stroy reader but here’s a link back- The Lottery by Shirley Jackson. Read it and be horrified!

    http://www.classicshorts.com/stories/lotry.html

Also, why are people expressing surprise that a boy likes books? Talk about gender typing… I’m a guy and I like books. Maybe it’s a cultural thing? (I’m irish)

    • Hey! Please do add me on Goodreads if you get an account, and remind me that you’re the one who left all of these wonderful comments on my blog. (:

I’ve heard good things about The Lottery, so I have bookmarked it and will read it some time in the near future (I’m taking the SAT tomorrow… and I have myriad homework assignments to complete this weekend. And other things.) Thank you for sharing the story with me.

Also, I think that the people who are expressing their surprise have just not met a lot of people like you and me in real life. For example, at the book club in my school there are over 30 female members… and I think about three guys. Perhaps it is a cultural thing as well.

  26. Paige Elkin

Hi Thomas. I stumbled upon your blog whilst searching for some help with my own relationship. I know that looking for help from complete strangers is rather pathetic, but sometimes I trust unknown opinion more than those of my friends. Anyways, I think you are absolutely brilliant. I wanted to inform you of this and ensure that you were aware of impact your words have made on my life. I am inspired to live my life until I die. Thank you.
    -Paige.

    • Wow Paige, thank you! Don’t worry, sometimes I Google advice as well instead of asking people I know in real life – I even got linked back to one of my own blog posts, once. It’s not pathetic in the least. I’m glad that my writing has inspired you to live your life to the fullest, because you really deserve to!

Thanks for dropping by and leaving such a wonderful comment,
      Thomas

  27. elyseksommer

    Hi Thomas,
Although, I no longer remember how I found your blog, I’m happy I did. Maybe, it’s the name of your blog “thequietvoice” that struck me since it reminds me of myself. I’m also shy and out of the ordinary and there are times where you just want to find someone that is similar to you and I’m glad I did. Not sure why I randomly started typing a comment and I think I just made the atmosphere a little awkward so…….bye!
    – Elye

    • Aw, I’m happy that you found my blog too! One of the best things about blogging is meeting people who have similar interests or mindsets to you. Please feel free to randomly add comments whenever you want, I enjoy it – I even wrote a paper for one of my classes on how to be awkward (it’s on this blog now!). Looking forward to hearing more from you, thanks for stopping by.

  28. I can’t believe that I have not found your blog earlier! I’ve seen your comments on Michelle’s page but never really clicked your page. Glad that I did now. Wow…the amount of books you read really surprise me because not many boys of your age read because I have a brother your age and oh boy, he does not read. I have tried hard to get him to read at least a book but nope, my attempts are futile.

Anyway, I’m really glad I found your page~ and I shall stalk your blog from now on. =D

    x
    Rosie

    • Gotta love the Innocent Lam. I’ve received the “wow, you read a lot” comment a lot, from what I’ve heard guys tend to pick up reading a little later on in life – though that’s a generalization, because there are plenty of males who have enjoyed reading since their childhood or teen years.

I’m glad you like my blog, and I’ve followed you back! Thanks for stopping by.

  29. chaiichi05

You did put a lot of effort in here 🙂 I LIKE IT!!! 😀 I wanna read more!

  30. sarah

wow, your writing skills put me to shame 🙂 I’m so impressed! I first want to thank you because you lead me to some AMAZing books. Hey, when did you first come to America? and…how can you write so well? My essays, + grammar are horrible ㅠ_ㅠ no matter how much I read. Help me~! 🙂

    • Thanks Sarah! I actually was born here in the US, which contributes to why my writing may seem impressive when it really isn’t that great. Trust me, reading and writing often will improve your writing – I guarantee it. In fact, from your comment it doesn’t seem like your grammar is that bad.

  31. sarah

your blog makes me want to make one myself !!! <<just searched wordpress in google, wish me luck V

  32. Liz Dallton

and i love your backgound. it makes me feel peaceful like books always do

    • In response to your other comment, I am glad that you support gays despite the fact that you are straight! And thanks, I like my background too – though I feel like it needs a change some time in the future, it’ll pass for now.

  33. Hi there, Thomas! Have a happy blogging experience 😉

  34. Anna

Wow! You write great reviews! It sounds like an adult wrote it! 😀 I read your review on one of Sarah Dressens books and it was great! 😀 just thought I’d congratulate you! 🙂

  35. Hey, I just thought I’d stop here to say that your blog looks great. I look forward to reading your thoughts on books, music, and social issues.

I have a “quiet voice” myself, in real life. I often find it’s easier for me to write a long blog post analyzing a book than it is to make eye contact with a stranger on the street. Thank goodness for the Internet!

    • Thanks for stopping by! Yes, some of us introverts do tend to resort to the internet and blogging to express ourselves, but this is definitely not a bad thing. Looking forward to reading more of your work, too. (:

  36. hey thomas ! I like your blog so much…you do have a great talent in describing yourself…thanks alott coz now we know that we r not posting on a killer’s blog…hehe,, hey im also asian so, i understand what you’re feeling too…:) keep up the awesome work ! 🙂 bubye ! love shinee and 2pm so much too !!! 🙂 smiles:)

  37. Star

OMG I just found your blog today and love it! Based on the fact that you are a SHINee fan I will keep visiting this blog lol

  38. Kay

I just can’t help smiling when you keep referring yourself as a kind / nice person. You’re so cute. Well, honestly, I have been following your reviews on goodreads. (You’re really passionate about reading) Well just one question. I have always found boys not that keen on reading romance, and you’re the exception! Don’t you find it odd? (no offense) 😉

    • Hey Kay, thanks for taking the time to check out my blog! While I think it is a stereotype that boys don’t enjoy reading romance, some stereotypes were formed from prior truths. For the most part I think adolescent males enjoy novels that will keep their immediate attention, so they tend to read more action/adventure/science fiction. Also, some of the guys my age I’ve talked to like reading books that have a male protagonist/narrator, and a lot of romance novels are in the perspective of females.

These are just generalizations though – I’m 100% certain that there are other males my age who love reading romance novels too. Once again, thanks again for reading and commenting!

  39. Andreas

Hey! I’m new at GoodReads and I kinda stumbled upon your reviews some other day, and I have to say, it was great! I loved it, so I decided to follow your reviews. Actually, we both have quite not-that-many in common. Some of them includes: “I’m also the kind of guy who is quiet and shy at first but becomes more outgoing and expressive when comfortable. ” and “I’m obsessed with books.” Well, see, no that many, but I love listening to music, too. 🙂 Anyway, this is a great blog, and would it bother you if I add you as my friend on GoodReads? NIce meeting you!

P.S: If I were to live in America, I would’ve gone to Barnes & Nobles everyday, pretty much. 🙂 And also, I’ve been wanting to make a blog, but I didn’t know what to do with it, so I guess after seeing yours, I might want to make one. 🙂

    • Hi Andreas! I love meeting people through Goodreads, and I’m glad we have some things in common – please feel free to add me. I wish I could go to Barnes & Noble everyday, but then I would be too tempted to buy books… with my current lack of funds that would not be a good thing. Anyway, it’s great that I’ve somewhat inspired you to make your own blog! Please send me the link to it if you decide to make it, and feel free to comment/message me with questions. (:

      • Andreas

I’m sorry, but I didn’t quite get the last sentence. By it, you meant the blog or what? Yeah, right. I have funds issues, too. 🙂 What’s worse, is that in Surabaya, there are few bookstores which sell English novels, so yeah, it’s hard to find them. I love Barnes & Nobles and I so want to explore it. I went there once, when I joined a tour, and too bad I didn’t quite spend some time there cuz in the next few hours, we’d have gone to the airport to fly back to my country. 🙂

        • Yep, I meant your blog! Sorry about that. It’s unfortunate that your bookstores possess a paucity of English novels, but your English is fine and you seem to have a propensity for reading, both which are fantastic signs. I’m sure you’ll have more opportunities if you decide to visit again or go to university here.

          • Andreas

Thanks a lot! Yeah, it’s just too bad. Once, there were rumors about Kinokuniya wanting to open one of their outlets here, but I don’t think it’s going to happen.

  40. Hello, Thomas … Nice to read this ‘about me’ page. I love ur writing, although my English is not good hahahaha. I also love K-Pop and big fan of SuJu 😀

    Best regards from Indonesia 🙂

  41. jessmittens

Have you ever read High Fidelity? Your talk of pop music makes me ask 🙂

  42. Wow…you’re a very good writer, BTW! I’ve never read someone write the way you do about K Pop, of all things 😉

  43. samssocial

Hi, just stumbled across you’re blog, and I live it. Look forward to reading more. I agree with the above comment about high fidelity. One of my best ever books.

  44. Hey, nice blog! I stumbled on it when you made a comment on my blog. Good luck with your college apps!

  45. You have a great blog from what I can see. I’m flattered that you’ve chosen to follow me. I’m thinking of having a therapeutic tnursady where I tackle a psychological issue. You might enjoy those posts. I look forward to hearing more from you.
    thanks again,
    Lisa

  46. Just dropping by to ask how’s prep for college going? Did you get admission or something?

  47. jessica

    Hi, Thomas!
I’ve just began reading your blog, and since you love to read, would you mind sending me a bpolicy list? I am an avid reader, myself and I love getting recommendations from peers!

    • Hey Jessica, thanks for checking out my blog. By bpolicy list do you mean a list of my favorite books or books I would recommend?

      • jessica

I would prefer your favorite books. Also, i had not proofread my comment, so the error “bpolicy” was actually supposed to be more along the lines of “book”. Sorry about that one.

        • Oh it’s okay, I was thinking – is “bpolicy” some literary term I haven’t heard of? Some of my favorite books include What They Always Tell Us by Martin Wilson, To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, East of Eden by John Steinbeck, the Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare, Sing You Home by Jodi Picoult, the Wolves of Mercy Falls trilogy by Maggie Stiefvater, Gone With the Wind by Margaret Mitchell, The Help by Kathryn Stockett, and the Hunger Games trilogy by Suzanne Collins.

You can find more of my favorite books through my Goodreads account, which I included a link to in my contact information tab!

  48. I really enjoyed reading some of your posts because they made me think and I appreciate that…I am glad I found this blog and I will follow this certainly to read more of your views on a regular basis. Keep it up!

  49. I feel like your a more mature version of me. 😀 I like your style of writing, I hope you do well in the future 😀

  50. It’s good to come across younger people who love reading – hooray! And, as an editor, I’m going to commend you on your excellent writing: you have a good style and great grammar, spelling and punctuation. That’s something that’s all too rare in bloggers, even book bloggers, so I salute you for it. I’m subscribing to your blog via Google Reader and look forward to reading more!

  51. Thomas, Caught your blog from the WordPress tweet linking to your post on high school athletics. You are doing very well, and not just “for someone your age.” 🙂 Head down, pen up! Your incisive analysis and excellent writing will take you far! Wishing you all the very best in your pursuits!

  52. The Great Surge

hope the reply I sent got to you

  53. And yes, I am an INFJ as well! I am glad that I stumbled upon your blog and I know that we could be great blogging friends!

  54. The Great Surge

here is the reply to your football blog that you wanted, give it a read, it isn’t that long

    http://reesarch.wordpress.com/2013/01/17/why-sports-will-always-have-precedence-over-academics-in-the-american-education-system/

  55. I definitely look forward to reading your posts! I love to read and I love music as well. I’m more into rock and alternative music but I love a good pop song! 🙂

  56. Hello there, Thomas! I’m glad I am blogwalking right now despite the complain of my hungry stomach, coz I found your amazing blog. I followed your blog coz i wanted to read more from you.

    Cheers!

  57. Hii Thomas . your blog is very nice. loved reading it. 🙂

  58. That awkward moment when you go to comment on an about me, read through the comments, and realize that you commented approximately two years ago under an odd name, sounding very, very young…

    • I remember you! From what I recall and how your writing sounds now you’ve matured quite a bit. It’s great that we’ve been reunited in the blogosphere.

      • The fact that you can recall anything at all is wicked impressive- I only vaguely recall even writing half of the things I found on here when I logged back on. Glad to be reacquainted! (And I have matured, as I’m assuming, you have as well)

  59. Andreas

Hey, Thomas, just wanna ask you a question. 🙂 Have you watched Queer As Folk? 🙂

    • I haven’t yet, Andreas. So many people have recommended it to me though, so when I get more free time I’ll try it. Do you watch it?

      • Andreas

Yeah. I’m currently-watching it. I have just finished downloading the whole 5 seasons and am pretty much excited, since I’ll be watching it for the entire week before my class begins. You should DEFINITELY watch it. Some of the couples are to be yearned for! :))

  60. Hello! I found your blog through a friend’s – she reblogged one of your posts. Your blog is wonderful. It’s cool to find other teenagers who like writing.

  61. I just came across your blog and look forward to coming back and reading your thoughts on things 🙂 I’m excited you like dystopias novels because they are my favorite!

  62. Hey Thomas I was just introduces to your blog recently and I have to say it kind of puts mine to shame. It’s really good to see another guy who loves books, these days I don’t get to read but books are basically my obsession. Anyway I love the blog and will be looking you up on goodreads.

P.S if you accept the friend request just know that I tend to read a lot of romances, maybe a little too much anyway just be prepared 🙂

    • Your blog is impressive as well! I love talking to anyone of any gender who reads, I’m glad to make your acquaintance no matter what type of books you read. I gravitate toward YA but right now my reading list is an amalgam of several genres; I look forward to discussing books and other subjects with you!

      • Thanks a lot 🙂 . Also I don’t want to impose or anything but I’ve started writing a book and if you have the time I would love a third persons perspective on it. I know you like YA novels so maybe you’ll like it. The first 6 chapters are on my blog so if you have the time I would love your input 🙂

  63. I’ve nominated you for the Beautiful Blogger award because I think your blog is so inspirational and lovely! 😀 http://girlwiththesilverlocket.wordpress.com/2013/02/22/asdfghjkl-i-has-an-award/

  64. Hey Thomas, I nominated you for the Very Inspiring Blogger Award before I found out you don’t post awards. The thought is there anyway. 🙂

  65. thehowlingfantogs

Hi Thomas. We’re friends on We Read, and I’ve finally made the jump into blogging. It’s great to read more about you, as well as the books you read.

  66. Hey, Thomas I’m afraid I nearly forgot to let you know that you have been awarded the Very Inspiring Blogger Award 🙂

  67. You have a great site.

I know you must hear this from a lot of bloggers, but I’ve nominated you for an award. It’s mainly to express my appreciation for your work and invite you to see mine.

If you want to play along, you can find my nomination post here –

In Which I Accept An Award I Can’t Repeat (Because It Is Filled With Meaningless Slang I Abhor)

If not, just keep up the good writing. Pretend I was never here.

  68. WordsFallFromMyEyes

You sound very interesting, Thomas. I love singers & dancers, even if they’re shy about it 🙂

  69. Quinten

Hey Thomas, I read one of your reviews on goodreads a while ago and added you as a friend. I have read a lot of your reviews and I just wanted to tell you there awesome! Thanks for always posting such great stuff! I feel like I can relate so closely to your opinions. Hopefully some day I can advance as a writer and be able to explain my opinions as amazing as you can!

    • Hey Quinten, it’s great that you can relate not just to my views but to my writing! Improving your writing definitely involves more practice than talent – I think one can discern a change in the quality of my blog throughout the years, even. Please send me a message or comment on a post or two if you want to discuss certain ideas further. Thanks for stopping by!

      • Quinten

Alright i will make sure I do that some time! I definitely enjoy reading all of your reviews and highly respect your opinions. I would love to discuss some ideas with you in further detail. I will probably send you some messages on goodreads sometime. Thanks!

  70. Kaitlyn

I just had to check out your blog after reading and following your book reviews on goodreads! I also am Asian-American and have fairly strict parents. It’s always good to know that there are others out there who share the love of books. My friends sometimes think I’m crazy to want to read a book instead of listen to their mindless chatter… Anyways, can’t wait to read more of your inspiring, yes I’m inspired from them, reviews:)

    • Aw, it’s always reassuring to know that at least one person out there is reading my reviews. (: There must be more Asian-Americans with strict parents who love to read in this wide world of ours, but it’s great that we’ve found each other! Don’t let your friends get you down and I’m looking forward to discussing books with you.

  71. Hi! I nominated you for the Shine On Award. Should you choose to accept, please follow the instructions posted on my home page. Love your blog! ♥

  72. Hi, I’ve nominated you for The Super Sweet Blogging Award at http://yaheart.com/2013/06/20/the-super-sweet-blogging-award/! I hope you accept the nomination, but even if you don’t, please know that I enjoy reading your posts!

I know i’ve commented on this before and I can’t resist myself, but I needed to express my blogospherical crush on your blog (and maybe even you). That’s it. Hope you have a nice day.

    • Aw that really boosts my non-existent self-esteem! (; But, honestly, thank you so much and I’m glad that you enjoy reading my posts. Gives me motivation to keep on writing them. Hope you have a fabulous day as well!

  74. Anon

i stumbled over your blog on google but i wanna give you respects for all this. its really meaningful man. keep doin what u do

  75. Very nice introduction. I thank you for following my blog. I am pretty shy and introverted when talking to strangers at first. But then later when I get to know them more, I can’t stop talking!. Also I love books too. We have similar interests.. Nice reading about you, Thomas!

  76. HelloHwaitingBuhBye

So many reasons to be jealous of you… I wish I could understand myself as much as you do for yourself. I saw you on another blog… and I thought to myself… I wish I had brains and time to do what you do…

(bwah seems like I’m feeling sorry for myself ha..ha. uhmm)

Yeah, as I said before, nice blog Thomas. You’re very witty and smart. And you have many traits and opinions that I can relate to. But you’re a cooler person. Great blogging, keep it up! 🙂

    • You shouldn’t put yourself down, I bet you have many qualities and talents that I don’t have – even if you don’t recognize them yet. Thanks for all of your kind words though; perhaps it’s not so much having the time to write, but making the time. I hope to hear more from you and your opinions!

  77. HelloHwaitingBuhBye

Thomas. How did you get into reading? Just wondering how you found your passion(s). I’m really curious and hope I could employ the concepts you use. I feel like my life has gone no where… and the fact you’re only a year older than me already with big achievements.

    Good day to you.

    • Ah, I could write an entire post on how I got into reading – and maybe I will – but the basic answer is that at first I used it as an escape from my childhood, which sucked. Then I just developed a natural affinity toward it and the written word in general and it’s been rolling ever since. Having a Goodreads account to connect to fellow book readers and really share my love of books has helped a bunch too. I wouldn’t say that I have big achievements at this point, and I’m confident that you’ve done more than you say. (:

      • HelloHwaitingBuhBye

        ….my childhood sucked too.. :/

Aah once again I’m jealous of you. You’ve pushed yourself. I haven’t. But your blog makes me want to now ^.^ I wish I discovered it sooner but I’m glad I stumbled across it through something completely random…

        • I’m glad my blog has motivated you, those are some of the best words a writer can hear! Ah yes, the K-Pop connection… well, keep me updated on how your life continues, or just throw in a comment every now and then!

          • Sad Little Panda

I’d very much like to keep you updated on my life. Actually, without trying to sound weird or desperate, I wish I had a friend like you. I’m just surprised you don’t have many friends. Unless you find it difficult to connect with people like me… But I feel you’d be great to talk to. Kind of depressing really now I’m saying all of this… -_-

            Good day to you Thomas.

            • Sad Little Panda

              *Correction*

“…I feel you’d be great to talk to…” ~ No, You ‘are’ great to talk to. 😀 😛

              • Ha, while I do have some acquaintances, I prefer having a select few close friends than trying to befriend anybody and everybody. It’s great that we can communicate to one another through this medium though – if you want to talk about anything you don’t feel comfortable sharing on this comment thread, feel free to message me via my contact information!

  78. Now obsessed with your blog. We have such similar taste in books! I also found some books to add to my shelf after perusing your entries. Love your writing style. Can’t wait to see how you develop upon entering college. Good luck and thanks for sharing your words.

    • I love your blog too! I agree about our similar taste in books as well as our similar future career paths. Looking forward to reading more of your posts and comments.

  79. Mackenzie

Hey nice blog! Your posts seems very well-thought out and honest. See you at W&M in a week! ^^

  80. sexyketchup

    You are super cute 😛

  81. hannahcharnley

Wow, your blog is really good!

  82. Donnie

Wow, very interesting. This is the first time I find someone my age who does exactly what I want to do. Maybe I can start a blog after all….I never thought anyone would be interested. But here you are, and I’m interested. If I can prove to myself I’m worth something by doing this…maybe things will change. Thing is though, would I be doing it just to prove to myself that I’m worth something, or would I be doing it because I actually enjoy it? Sometimes I think I know myself. Sometimes I feel like I will never. I can only hope. And I can only experience it if I do it. *sigh* I wish I started this sooner…but…I guess it’s never too late as long as I’m alive. Nice blog. And thanks for the great find.

    • You’re right, it’s never too late to start something new – now all you have to do is actually write! Please let me know if you want any tips to start with, and I would love to read what you produce if you want to send me a link to your blog when you start it. (:

  83. I just found your blog, thanks to a recommendation from the Howlingfan … and it’s ever so cool. Wow !

  84. Just found you from Queerlandia! One new follower, can’t wait to read more!

  85. Victoria

I miraculously stumbled upon your blog today and went through some of your blogposts. You’re amazing! I don’t read nearly as much as you do. Mostly before bedtime haha! You’ve inspired me to look at different genres that may sparkle my interest! You sound like an awesome person! I’ll be stalking your blog from now on (: oh yah! And I believe we’re the same age! LOL kind of random to bring that up but I just think it’s really cool to meet someone my age that’s so so so passionate about books… you’re the first actually!

    • It’s my pleasure that you stumbled across my blog, and I’m ecstatic to hear that you enjoy my posts – people who read at any age deserve respect. I look forward to reading more of your comments in the future, and thank you for dropping by!

  86. Hullo from an INTJ, dystopian-literature loving, fellow book escapist. 🙂

  87. Charlotte

Hi, I found your page through a good reads review you made on some book I can’t remember (but I do remember I agreed with you). So glad I found it because now I can finally fangirl over books with someone! Well..through comments anyway. No one my age reads books. Or at least no one that I know of.
Honestly, I probably shouldn’t even be on your site right now though. AP tests coming up soon. Yay…

    • Aw, I’m sorry that you don’t have many people in your area who read, but at least you have Goodreads and other sites to connect with people and fangirl with them! Sorry for the late reply – how did you think you did on your AP exams? Which ones did you take? Also, thank you so much for coming to my blog and taking the time to read and comment. (:

  88. Wow Thomas. Maybe you are from the same place as me. I went to UVA and know a number of people who went to W & M.

  89. The Howling Fantogs

Hey Thomas. Needed something good to read, so thought I’d have a flick through your old posts. This about page reminds me what I loved about your blog in the first place.

  90. Lia B.

Hi Thomas. I just clicked on the link. Me, Lia, from Goodreads. This is good stuff. You should email me a scan of your autograph so when you’re a famous published author I can say I knew your online persona way back when. I will friend request you. Will you strongly object?

  91. I happened upon your blog today completely at random. As a high school sophomore who loves to read, watch anime, and play video games, I really resonated with your writing. Great subject topics for those of us going through the high school grind 🙂 I really enjoy your writing, keep up the good work! I’ve moved twice in the last two years, and your blog is helping me keep up my spirits. Thank you.

    • Aw, Chris, it’s so great to hear that reading my blog has helped you out, even if it only serves as entertainment. I hope that you’re doing well and adjusting to your surroundings as best you can!

  92. Hey, just sort of fell onto here through the marvelous directions of Goodreads. I love your blog and I also READ. I cannot imagine a life without books. If you have time, check out my wordpress. If you don’t it’s fine, I’ll just go hide in that corner over there.

    🙂

  93. Rick

I love your blog so far. Your mind is like mine and your body is like my fiancé. Great combo.

  94. Kelli

It is such a gift to listen to the opinions/views of others without needing or wanting to change those people or prove your point or be right. I applaud your honest writing and mad book review skills. Congratulations on your blogaversary. This is my first ever blog comment but you inspire me. Keep on keeping on!

    • I agree, just listening to people possesses so many merits, instead of trying to talk over them or change their viewpoints to fit your own. Thank you for stopping by and sharing with me your first ever blog comment!

  95. Thomas, found you through Colleen at Chatter Master. Your comment intrigued so chose to peruse your site. An INFJ and empath; that’s all I need to know about an obviously grounded being. Ergo, my follow.

  96. INFJ?! Instant BFF! I found you through The Midnight Garden. *virtual waves

  97. Hello Thomas! I’ve decided to read and follow 15 interesting and new blogs a day every day for the first month of 2015, and yours is today’s #6! Feel free to come visit me when you can at http://www.thatssojacob.wordpress.com, and follow if you like what you read. Happy new year and happy blogging!

  98. Hi 🙂 I look forward to reading your posts, especially book reviews since I’m a bit of a bookworm !

  99. Kero

Your writing is amazing. I found one of your old blogs in 2011 and was completely surprised later on to find out that you were actually 15 when you wrote that piece.

Guess I shouldn’t be too surprised to find out that you are an INFJ. It definitely shows in your writing and analytical skills. You also remind me of someone I was once very close to, who I admired a lot, and probably placed on a pedestal.

I’m definitely going to follow your posts. Just curious, would you also happen to have a facebook medium/group to follow? Otherwise I guess I’ll use email (Just that I don’t always check it frequently…)

    • Aw Kero, thank you for your kind words! I still consider deleting my old posts sometimes because of how young I was when I wrote them, but I suppose they do show my improvement as a writer. I would love to hear more about this person if you want to talk about them if you wish.

If you contact me via my contact info I can provide you with my Facebook profile! I also have a Twitter and a Goodreads you can find on the “Contact Information” page. (: Hope to hear from you again soon!

  100. Hi, Thomas! Summer sent me your way, so glad she did. I see you are a mental health advocate – as I have been, too. I really like your blog, looking forward to following it!

  101. ericadsouza

I am so taken up with you. Seriously, I would love to be friends with you. You are so interesting, a good writer…a nice person.

I`m gonna make time and sit one day reading all your posts.

  102. theamazingworldofgummies

I love your blog so much. I devour books with much the same passion you do. Keep writing Thomas 🙂

  103. Maxine May

You have really inspired me, both as a writer and an individual, as I read through your posts. Due to how rare it is to find such honesty in most writing, your posts are certainly refreshing to read. As a future English major myself, your posts make me want to work harder on my own writings, and also to look at life in a different perspective. I also believe that you’re incredibly resilient, and I certainly admire you for that. Never stop writing, and keep inspiring people! Judging from how caring you appear to be, I know you’ll make a great therapist; just please remember that you are making a difference even when it feels like you’re not.

  104. Love your blog! So glad I became your friend on goodreads :p

  105. Aisha

    Hey there
Just here to say that the first thing I do after reading a book is go to Goodreads and check if you’ve written a review of it! I value your view on each of the reviews I have read.
    Awesome stuff man 🙂

  106. Loving the re-jig of this page. Awesome is the word that was designed for you.

  107. I second what Liz said. It’s professional without the aloofness. And I’m loving that pic 🙂

  108. Christine Williams

Hi Thomas! I have been reading your Goodreads book reviews for some time now, but have only just found your blog. I am always touched by your honesty and your compassion. As the single mom of a transgender teen son, I can fully empathize with the challenges our society causes for all LGBTQ people. My son also faces mental health challenges, as does my elderly father, as do I. I care for the two of them- “sandwich generation” is my place at the moment. I cannot agree with you more that the stigmas against mental health conditions and sufferers remain, and that we must do everything we can to erase them.

Congratulations on achieving your degrees in 2017, and best of luck in grad school! I look forward to reading more of your blog. I really admire your optimism!

    Best wishes ~ Christine

  109. Hermione K

Hi Thomas,I’ve been reading your Goodreads reviews, as many others did and I recently discovered your blog. As an undergraduate psychology student with a history of anorexia nervosa and suicidal behavior (still recovering) most of your reviews resonate with me and I’m really glad I finally get to know you better through your blog. I do hope we can get to chat someday, you seem like a truly inspiring person! Lots of love =)

  110. April Romero

    Hi Thomas! 😀
I’ve read a few of your blog posts and MANY of your Goodreads reviews (by the way, I think it’s so cool that I keep seeing you everywhere in about every book and corner of the app. I’m amazed you’ve been on Goodreads for so long too! I just began my account)!
Your writing feels like a hidden treasure that I just found. I love your voice and how vulnerable yet very inspiring it is.
Just wanted to say thank you for having a blog because it feels like I’m learning and reflecting so much. I love this character development of mine slay.
