Today has been a great day. I love Fridays, for real. The weather is warm but not hot, cool but not humid… okay, on with what I think of the song. I feel like people will take this post as a joke anyway (somewhat like the song itself).
For people who don’t know what I’m referring to, here is the infamous song that has become a pop sensation seemingly overnight.
Now before I analyze this piece of work, I would like to say that I have nothing against Rebecca Black. In fact, I believe that people on the internet are becoming overly ostentatious and hurtful towards her. It is disrespectful and rather shallow to insult someone online – I bet almost none of the people posting cruel comments about her would dare say those things to her in real life. Though, that’s what the internet does; it makes people confident, and often too confident.
And yes, I did say that I am going to analyze this song. My brain needs a break once in awhile…
Here are some lyrics I personally would be embarrassed to sing (or write):
“Kickin in the front seat, sitting in the back seat, gotta make my mind up, which seat should I take?”
Ouch. This line wouldn’t be that bad if not for:
1) It leads up to the chorus, which has nothing to do with riding in cars or choosing seats. I’m not sure if the chorus has anything to do with anything, really…
2) There are seats available in her friend’s car.
3) Isn’t she waiting for the bus? Hence, her standing at the bus stop?
“Fun, fun, fun, fun…”
This sounds like something you would hear on a Kids’ Channel. Like Nickelodeon. Maybe that’s what her intent was in producing this…
“Yesterday it was Thursday. Today it is Friday… Tomorrow is Saturday. And Sunday comes afterward.”
Thanks, because people who listen to this song obviously don’t know the days of the week and the order they occur in. That was sarcasm. I often ponder the appropriateness of using sarcasm online.
Other artists name days of the week in their songs, namely Fergie/Black Eyed Peas. But they don’t use the bridge for it, nor do they emphasize it so unnecessarily.
“We we we so excited… we we we so excited.”
OH. OW. As a grammar freak, this just pains me. Like a punch to the stomach. Okay, a lot of music doesn’t have proper grammar, that’s understandable. The lack of a to be verb in such a simple clause, however, is too much. This line destroyed the whole song for me.
Before I end this post, I’m going to reiterate that I have absolutely nothing against Rebecca Black. Nothing. I just don’t like this one particular song. I might be going out on a limb here, but I also don’t think she has the worst voice ever. I even thought I heard some talent when I heard her sing the National Anthem. Does this make her the best singer? No. Is “Friday” the worst song ever produced? Again, most likely not. It’s just the worst to ever receive this much publicity.
