I Finally Made Friends! (the Wonders of Technology…)

Well, sort of. This is what I used to take my new profile pictures:

My awesome fourth generation IPod Touch. It's white, which happens to be one of my favorite colors.

And this is the guy who I will bring along with me to social gatherings in which I will feel inclined to sit in a corner and read:

So I finally own a Kindle... I think my father owns about five of them.

And this is the interior of my new best friend. Breathtaking, I know.

Both of these I received as late Christmas gifts from my brother and father respectively, and of course I really appreciate them. My family is very technology-oriented, another aspect in which I am the black sheep – beyond Word and the internet, I am lost.

Anyway, these two devices are seriously becoming like close friends to me… not like I would know what having friends feels like. I’ve been using a first generation IPod Touch for three years and this new one has a bunch of amazing features such as a camera, a built-in speaker, and many other amenities that could eat up one’s free time if not handled responsively. I take it to the gym with me, I use it as a dictionary, heck, I even took the time to encase it in an awesome… case.

It's protected like the Mona Lisa. Okay, not really. But close enough.

As for the Kindle, I’ve been resisting its charm constantly for quite some time. I’m a fan of tangible books – books that I can hold in my hands and flip their pages, books that I can annotate with a real pencil or mark with a real sticky note, books that I can give to my friends so that they too can revel in reading delight.

Yet, when my father gave me the Kindle as a gift, I thought to myself, what the heck. It’s convenient in that it can carry thousands of books, is small enough to take with me to many places, and has useful features such as a built-in dictionary and categories for me to organize my books. While reading on the Kindle may not measure up to holding an actual book in my hands, it’s not a device that I would disparage, because the Kindle actually promotes reading, which I appreciate.

I suppose this is a good time to share my thoughts about technology. We as humans are naturally inclined to love things that lessen our workload, and though we can groan and bemoan how technology is becoming so prevalent in society, we do in fact gravitate toward these devices no matter how lazy they make us look. Obviously there’s a problem when kids are spending their time playing video games instead of reading or going outside, but, like almost all things in life, balance is key. Parents should model positive behavior that blends benefiting from the advantages of technology and doing things the old-fashioned way so that one can build character.

Though now that I think of it, if it weren’t for technology, I wouldn’t be writing this right now. Nor would I even have a blog, or a Facebook, or an email account… but then again, with that extra time I could actually live my life and make real friends go outside or sleep at normal hours. Pros and cons, pros and cons…

What do you think of technology? Did you get anything similar to what I got for Christmas? I like how I intended this post to be purely personal, yet it became a musing on technology. I suppose that’s what happens when I write these things at midnight. I hope everyone is having a splendid New Years Eve! Also, for those who don’t follow me on twitter, I’ve updated my “about me” section if you want to check it out.

  1. I have resisted the pull of the e-reader for a long time. My husband got me the Kindle Fire for my birthday a couple of weeks ago. Classics are FREE DOWNLOADS! Big fun. The challenge is wading through all the crap books to find them. Enjoy!

    • Classics are free? I did not know that, thanks for telling me… and that’s sweet of your husband to buy you a Kindle Fire, my dad has one of those too. Thanks for reading and commenting!

Awesome Thomas! You made out like a bandit:) I own an ipod touch but it’s an earlier generation I think? See how tech savvy I am, so do not feel bad in the least. They are so much fun, but I got that present on my birthday. But I am with you on the e-readers, I’m not really “against” them or anything. It’s just that it could never replace a tangible book but if I got a cool one like that I’d use it;)
You’re right about the whole technology, pros and cons. At least in my personal life I think it carries more pros. I feel like my ideas have expanded and that is never a bad thing right? Plus without it we wouldn’t be able to read this marvelous blog! đŸ˜€

    • That’s true, the internet does allow us to learn things and connect with other people easily, and it can help augment one’s ideas. I got my first IPod Touch on my birthday too (my thirteenth birthday, to be exact)!

Thanks for reading and commenting on these two posts Cara, and I hope you have a Fantastic New Year!

  3. I’m no tech savvy, and I’m quite stingy with gadgets. In fact, my previous phone was black and white. I was pretty contented with the fact that I can call and text with my phone. Until I needed a camera and voice recorder for academic purposes. That’s when I settled to buy a new phone. (Like I would buy a separate cam and recorder lol.) It satisfies the basic needs. What I find very delightful though is the fact that it gives more than what I needed. It might sound so noob, but I do love the apps feature! Especially the PDF and Ebook readers. I usually store lectures and notes with the phone. It’s also quite convenient to get copies of books not available nearby. Even so, I do agree with you that real books are preferable. I’ve just completed the Hunger Games trilogy gazing at the screen. It was exhausting. Add to that, it’s painstaking to highlight things, and not possible to scribble in personal notes. I still have plenty of reads pending in my phone. But I was considering of having those printed instead.

    • Wow, you read books on your phone? I’ve honestly never heard of that. My phone can only call and text (like your old one), but your new phone seems quite impressive. My dad tried to teach me how to highlight passages in books with my kindle and I’m struggling to get the hang of it, I see that I’m not the only one. If it doesn’t take too much money, paper, or pink, maybe printing out the next few things you plan to read is a good idea. (:

  4. I got a Kindle for my birthday this year. I loved it so much I blogged about it too. It’s my favourite toy, although I must admit that I’m not tech-savvy at all and it’s the only thing I own.
I still bought all Stiefvater’s books in actual book form because the covers are so pretty, but I have a nice little library on my Kindle now, and it was brilliant for taking on holiday instead of a suitcase full of books đŸ™‚

    • We can be Kindle buddies! We’ve both blogged about them, and we both read on them. (:

I have almost all of Stiefvater’s books too. I still need to get the first one because I borrowed it from the library – I wasn’t sure if I was going to love it, but now that I know I do, I should go to a bookstore soon… anyway, I think that’s one of the most advantageous aspects of the Kindle: it’s convenient to take with you on vacations when you’ll be reading many books, because they’ll all be in that light, transportable device, which is much more preferable than a heavy suitcase.

Anyway, hope you have a Happy New Year Ruth!

  5. Oooh! That’s the new Kindle you’ve got, right? I envy you! I have an older model a 3G, my dad randomly decided to give to me earlier this year, my first one had an unfortunate accident which made me get another one. After I ordered then I saw the new one and I cursed myself for not waiting longer. I had the same feelings you have; not wanting to give up real books with actual covers but I rationalized, it holds tons of books and it’s travel size!So it’s okay and I get most of my reading done. I love it!

The newer model, I believe, has basically the same feature except for the touch screen and the physical design and some other stuff too.
I suck at on screen keyboards so that’s why my Kindle is best for me since mine has a physical key board and high-lighting’s a breeze, sorry, but you’ll get the hang of it. I should stop rambling right now!

Enjoy you new BFs and once again have a great New Year!

    • That’s one of the issues with technology – whenever you obtain some device, a newer version always comes out and you wish you had waited for that version. It’s also a smart marketing trick for companies. Anyway, I agree with you, it does make reading more accessible.

I also don’t like screen keyboards or touch screens, having the physical key board is so much easier (I also prefer phones with physical keyboards, texting with a touch screen is a nightmare). Thanks for the encouragement, I’ll keep it in mind as I struggle to master maneuvering my Kindle. (:

  6. That’s a lot of technology to receive in one day! I hope you had an awesome winter break btw!!!!!

Thomas, now we can play words with friendsss!!!!! GO, GOOOO!!

    • It is! My winter break was quite nice, I hope yours went well too.

Also, I’ve attempted playing Words with Friends before… contrary to popular belief, I was not as good as expected. And I’m scared of spending too much time playing it, because I am kind of obsessed with words.

So you got a white iPod touch and put it in a black case? Lol… I had my black one in a white case briefly but then I got a black one đŸ™‚ We’ve got 4.5G units, and you left out features such as slimmer and lighter, more battery life, Retina display, iOS 5, 800 MHz A4, 256 MB RAM!

    • Black and white are my favorite colors, so it works out. And thanks Rowan, I’m not the most technological type of guy so I’m glad you pointed those features out!
